NATO Accession Protocols — Finland and Sweden
Current understanding
The Protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949 on the Accession of the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Sweden extend NATO Article 5 collective defense obligations to Finland and Sweden. The US Senate gave advice and consent to both protocols, completing the US ratification step for alliance enlargement. Both countries have since acceded to NATO (Finland in 2023, Sweden in 2024) following ratification by all existing member states.
