Abstract

(SB1133 · 103rd Legislature) Retirement: state police; membership in the retirement system of certain law enforcement officers first hired after certain date; provide for, and allow for purchasing service credit for certain law enforcement officers’ service under the state employees’ retirement system. Amends secs. 3 & 4 of 1986 PA 182 (MCL 38.1609 & 38.1604). TIE BAR WITH: SB 1134’26, SB 1135’26 Sponsor: Sen. John Cherry (D) + 1 co-sponsor Latest action (2026-08-12): Senate Co-sponsor(s) Named: Mallory Mcmorrow

Why this matters

The bill expands which law enforcement officers are eligible for the more generous State Police Retirement System and lets them buy credit for time previously served under the general State Employees’ Retirement System. For affected officers this can materially change lifetime retirement benefits, and for taxpayers it shifts pension liabilities between two state-funded systems. Fiscal impact will depend on how many officers transfer and the purchase-cost formula in the companion bills.
