Paid Military Leave for Local Public Safety Employees

Current understanding

Under 1955 PA 133, local units of government have discretion over paid leave for employees called to military active service. HB 5232 of 2025 would convert this from optional to mandatory for law enforcement officers and fire department personnel employed by local units, narrowing local discretion for this class of public safety workers. The bill is tie-barred to HB 5233 and has passed a chamber.
