School Start Date Restrictions

Current understanding

Michigan law currently restricts public schools from starting classes before Labor Day, via sec. 1284a and 1284b of the Revised School Code (1976 PA 451) and sec. 160 of the School Aid Act (1979 PA 94, MCL 388.1760), which conditions state aid on compliance. HB6100 (introduced) would eliminate these restrictions by amending sec. 1284a and repealing sec. 1284b and sec. 160, giving districts full discretion over their academic calendar start date. The restriction has historically been defended on tourism-economy grounds and contested by districts seeking calendar flexibility.
