School Librarian Licensing

Current understanding

Michigan currently requires school librarians to hold a professional license as part of the credentialing framework under the Revised School Code (1976 PA 451). HB4922 (introduced) would eliminate this licensing requirement by adding section 1531k, changing who districts may hire into school librarian roles and removing a state-level professional certification barrier. The policy is contested: supporters frame it as easing staffing shortages and district flexibility, while opponents argue licensed librarians provide specialized instructional and information-literacy expertise.
