Telehealth Access for Tribal Communities Act of 2025

Key claim: HR2639 would permanently extend Medicare coverage for audio-only, at-home telehealth services furnished through the Indian Health Service to tribal communities.

Abstract

(HR2639 · 119th Congress) Telehealth Access for Tribal Communities Act of 2025 This bill permanently provides for Medicare coverage of audio-only, at-home telehealth services that are furnished through the Indian Health Service. Latest action (2025-04-03): Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

Why this matters

The bill would make permanent a Medicare payment pathway for audio-only, at-home telehealth delivered through the Indian Health Service, which affects what tribal beneficiaries can access without traveling to a facility and what IHS providers can bill Medicare for. Because most pandemic-era telehealth flexibilities have relied on temporary extensions, a permanent, population-targeted carve-out would be a notable shift in Medicare telehealth policy. If enacted, it would change coverage rather than cost-sharing, expanding the set of reimbursable service modalities for a specific underserved group.
