Labor Organization Annual Financial Reports
Key claim: The Department of Labor finalized updates to labor organization annual financial reporting requirements, including a new longer LM-2 Long Form for the largest unions, revised standard forms, and updated reporting thresholds to enhance financial transparency.
Abstract
(Rule · Labor Department, Labor-Management Standards Office) The Department of Labor (Department) publishes this combined final rule to its regulations to improve its LM Labor Organization Annual Financial Reports by establishing a longer LM form for the largest labor organizations (Form LM-2 Long Form), revising a slightly shorter form for most labor organizations at and above the $350,000 threshold (Form LM-2), making a parallel revision to Form LM-3, and updating reporting thresholds for Forms LM-3 and LM-4 to promote financial integrity and transparency. The final rule applies prospectively under section 208 of the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (LMRDA).
Why this matters
For unions, this raises compliance burden — particularly for the largest labor organizations that will now file a more detailed LM-2 Long Form — while smaller unions see threshold adjustments that determine which form (LM-2, LM-3, or LM-4) they must file. For members and employers, the changes are framed as expanding the granularity of publicly disclosed union financial data under the LMRDA, continuing a longstanding regulatory back-and-forth over how much detail large unions must itemize.
