Fisheries of the Northeastern United States; Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish; 2026 Illex Squid Quota Harvested

Key claim: NOAA is shutting down directed Illex squid fishing in federal waters from August 23 through December 31, 2026, because nearly all of this year’s catch quota has already been taken.

Abstract

(Rule · Commerce Department, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) NMFS is closing the directed Illex squid fishery in Federal waters based on a projection that 96 percent of the 2026 domestic annual harvest (DAH) will be harvested. This closure is effective 0001 hour (hr) local time on August 23, 2026, through 2400 hr local time on December 31, 2026. This action is necessary to comply with the regulations implementing the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan (FMP), and is intended to prevent the 2026 Illex squid annual catch limit from being exceeded.

Why this matters

Illex squid is one of the higher-value Mid-Atlantic commercial fisheries, and an early in-season closure removes a major target species for a substantial portion of the fall fishing calendar, likely shifting effort to longfin squid or butterfish and affecting dock prices for squid buyers and processors. The closure illustrates how NMFS annual catch limits (set in the earlier 2026 specifications rule) translate into concrete season-length outcomes for fishermen and consumers.
