PrEP Access and Coverage Act of 2026

Key claim: The PrEP Access and Coverage Act of 2026 (HR7853) would expand access to and coverage of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and has been referred to multiple House committees.

Abstract

(HR7853 · 119th Congress) Latest action (2026-03-05): Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committees on Oversight and Government Reform, Ways and Means, Veterans’ Affairs, Armed Services, Natural Resources, Financial Services, and Education and Workforce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.

Why this matters

HR7853 is a broad, multi-committee vehicle to expand HIV PrEP access across nearly every major federal health coverage program — Medicare, Medicaid, VA, TRICARE, IHS, FEHB, and ACA-regulated plans — rather than a single-program change. If enacted, it would standardize what patients pay for and what insurers must cover for an established preventive therapy. At introduction, the bill has only been referred to committee, so practical coverage and cost-sharing effects remain contingent on committee action.
