Dossier Legislative introduced 16-jul-2025
Bill introduced in Congress — not yet passed by either chamber, and not law.

To ban the sale of products with a high concentration of sodium nitrite to individuals, and for other purposes.

Key claim: The Youth Poisoning Protection Act (HR1442) would classify consumer products containing 10% or greater sodium nitrite as banned hazardous products, with exceptions for drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, and food.

Abstract

(HR1442 · 119th Congress) Youth Poisoning Protection Act This bill makes a consumer product with a concentration of sodium nitrite of 10% or greater a banned hazardous product. The restriction does not apply to specified drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, or food products. Latest action (2025-07-16): Read twice. Placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders. Calendar No. 116.

Why this matters

The bill would remove high-concentration sodium nitrite products from consumer retail channels, a means-restriction approach responding to their use in youth self-poisonings. For retailers and manufacturers, it creates a CPSC-enforced ban threshold (≥10%) while preserving access for regulated drug, device, cosmetic, and food uses. Status is introduced; no changes to coverage or FDA-regulated product access are triggered unless enacted.
