Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act

Key claim: The Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act directs the NSF to issue competitive awards supporting K-12 mathematical and statistical modeling education and to commission a National Academies study on the topic.

Abstract

(HR730 · 119th Congress) Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act This bill requires the National Science Foundation (NSF) to take certain actions to increase mathematical and statistical modeling education in elementary and secondary schools. First, the NSF must make competitive awards to institutions of higher education and nonprofit organizations for research and development to support high-quality mathematical modeling education (e.g., data science and computational thinking) in schools. This authority to provide awards expires on September 30, 2029. Second, the NSF must seek to enter into an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to study and report on mathematical and statistical modeling education in schools. Latest action (2025-03-25): Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

Why this matters

The measure would channel NSF competitive grants into a specific K-12 STEM sub-discipline—mathematical and statistical modeling—and commission a National Academies review of the field, signaling federal interest in shaping how quantitative reasoning is taught before college. For institutions and educators, it is an incremental funding stream rather than a structural change to Title programs or accreditation. Students would primarily see impact through curriculum pilots and teacher-training programs funded by the resulting awards.
