Why this matters

Energy and Water Development appropriations set annual funding for NNSA defense activities and DOE nuclear-security programs, which together represent a substantial portion of the national security budget outside the DoD topline. Tracking both the Senate (S.3293) and House (H.R. 4553) vehicles clarifies the fiscal trajectory for atomic energy defense, environmental cleanup of former weapons sites, and civil works infrastructure with security implications. Status remains routine annual appropriations with no new authorities introduced.
