Addressing Teacher Shortages Act of 2026

Key claim: HR7883 would direct the Department of Education to establish a grant program helping local educational agencies address teacher shortages through residency programs, mentoring, recruitment, training, and retention strategies.

Abstract

(HR7883 · 119th Congress) Addressing Teacher Shortages Act of 2026 This bill directs the Department of Education (ED) to establish an Addressing Teacher Shortages Program. Through this program, ED shall award grants for local educational agencies to address teacher shortage challenges. Specifically, grant funds may be used to establish or expand teaching residency programs, teacher mentor programs, specified recruitment and training programs, and other evidence-based strategies to increase teacher retention and support teachers. Latest action (2026-03-09): Referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce.

Why this matters

Teacher shortages affect staffing, class sizes, and program continuity in K-12 systems, especially in high-need subjects and rural or under-resourced districts. HR7883 would channel federal grant funds to LEAs to build residency, mentoring, and retention infrastructure, adding to a set of pending proposals aimed at the educator pipeline. If enacted, it would give districts a dedicated funding stream for workforce strategies that many currently support through discretionary Title II or state funds.
