Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025

Key claim: The Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025 extends federal payments to states and counties containing federal land through FY2026 and extends county and resource advisory committee project authority through FY2028.

Abstract

(S356 · 119th Congress) Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025 This bill extends and modifies the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000, including by extending payments made to states and counties containing federal land through FY2026, providing for payments for FY2024 and FY2025, extending the authority of counties to initiate projects using such funds through FY2028, and extending the authority to initiate projects proposed by resource advisory committees through FY2028. Latest action (2025-12-18): Became Public Law No: 119-58.

Why this matters

The SRS program is a core fiscal lifeline for rural counties with large federal landholdings that cannot tax those lands and have seen timber receipts decline. Reauthorization preserves funding for county schools, roads, and locally-directed forest projects, indirectly stabilizing rural economies where farming and ranching communities depend on county infrastructure. The extension is routine but its lapse would create immediate budget shortfalls in affected counties.
