Get Your Money Back Act
Key claim: HR4267 would require the IRS to maintain the Direct File free tax-filing program and mandate participation by all U.S. states and D.C. for tax years after 2025.
Abstract
(HR4267 · 119th Congress) Get Your Money Back Act This bill requires the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to continue to implement the Direct File program and, for tax years beginning after 2025, requires each U.S. state and the District of Columbia to participate in the Direct File program. (The Direct File program currently allows qualified taxpayers in 25 participating states to prepare and electronically file free federal tax returns through a portal on the IRS’s website.) Latest action (2025-06-30): Referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means.
Why this matters
HR4267 would convert Direct File from a discretionary IRS pilot into a statutorily required, nationwide free filing option, shifting cost and administrative burden from taxpayers (who currently pay commercial preparers or use limited Free File options) toward the IRS and state tax agencies required to integrate. Supporters frame it as guaranteed no-cost filing access; opponents raise federalism and cost concerns around mandating state participation. Status: introduced, referred to House Ways and Means.
