Civil Supersonic Overland Flight Regulation
Current understanding
The FAA has historically banned civil supersonic flight over U.S. land under 14 CFR 91.817, requiring case-by-case special authorization. A proposed rule would repeal this blanket prohibition and replace it with a performance-based noise certification standard, allowing overland supersonic operations by aircraft that meet defined acoustic limits.
