Tribal Broadband and Universal Service Comparability
Current understanding
Federal universal service law requires that telecommunications and information services in rural and high-cost areas be reasonably comparable to those in urban areas in terms of availability and rates. The Tribal Internet Expansion Act of 2025 (introduced) would explicitly extend that comparability principle to Indian country and areas with high Indian populations, directing universal service policy to treat those geographies as covered beneficiaries. Status: introduced legislation — no change in current FCC obligations or funding formulas.
