MARAD Citizenship Verification PII Reduction
Current understanding
The Maritime Administration finalized a rule modernizing how corporations establish U.S. citizenship for MARAD program participation, eliminating collection of officer/director birth dates and places, removing notarization requirements, and reducing certain stock-ownership reporting. From a data-privacy perspective, the change is a data-minimization measure: fewer categories of personally identifiable information about corporate principals are required to be submitted and retained by the federal government. Recertification procedures are also streamlined.
