Railroad Retirement Board Annuity Beginning and Ending Dates

Current understanding

The Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) administers annuities under the Railroad Retirement Act, including age-and-service annuities available to workers with 30 years of service at age 60. A prior RRB regulation required such claimants to accept an actuarially reduced benefit in order to begin their annuity on the first day of the month they turned 60, a limitation determined to be inconsistent with the underlying statute. The RRB has issued a final rule removing that regulatory restriction to restore alignment with the Railroad Retirement Act’s eligibility criteria.
