NRC Medical-Use Licensing (Byproduct Material)
Current understanding
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses medical uses of byproduct material (radiopharmaceuticals, brachytherapy, radiation therapy devices) under 10 CFR Part 35, including training and experience (T&E) requirements for authorized users, authorized medical physicists, and authorized nuclear pharmacists. A proposed rule under EO 14300 would trim prescriptive requirements, adjust T&E burdens, and create a more predictable pathway for licensing emerging medical technologies using byproduct material. Status: proposed rule.
