GusNIP Nutrition Incentive & Produce Prescription Programs (USDA)
Current understanding
USDA’s Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) funds two grant streams: Nutrition Incentive projects that match SNAP purchases of fruits and vegetables, and Produce Prescription Program projects that let healthcare providers ‘prescribe’ produce to patients with diet-related conditions. Current statute generally limits eligible items to fresh fruits and vegetables. The SHOPP Act of 2025 (introduced) would expand eligible items to include fresh frozen produce, add legumes to the Produce Prescription Program, and direct USDA to prioritize projects that provide year-round nutrition incentives to SNAP participants.
