Lead in Children’s Products & Toys
Current understanding
Federal law (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008) already sets limits on lead content in children’s products (100 ppm in accessible substrate; 90 ppm in paint/coatings), enforced by the CPSC. Periodic legislative proposals seek to tighten these limits or expand coverage; as of the current session, S4932 (No Lead in Toys Act) has been introduced and referred to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Practical effects of any new restriction would depend on threshold levels, testing/certification requirements, and compliance timelines for manufacturers and importers.
