Food Waste Reduction Policy
Current understanding
Federal efforts to reduce food waste sit primarily at EPA and USDA, with prior initiatives including EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy and the joint EPA/USDA/FDA 2030 Food Loss and Waste Reduction Goal. Legislative proposals such as HR6684 (Zero Food Waste Act, introduced) would authorize EPA to run a grant program for states, local, territorial, and tribal governments, and nonprofits to study and reduce food waste. Practical effect is capacity-building and measurement rather than mandatory diversion standards.
