SHORT Act (Short-Barreled Rifle NFA Removal)
Current understanding
The SHORT Act (H.R. 2395, 119th Congress) would remove short-barreled rifles (and, in prior iterations, short-barreled shotguns and any-other-weapons) from National Firearms Act coverage, eliminating the $200 transfer tax, registration, and pre-approval requirements for those categories. Referred to House Ways and Means and House Judiciary; status is introduced with no floor action. Practical effect if enacted would be to allow standard Form 4473 purchases of SBRs from FFLs without NFA paperwork, aligning their federal treatment with ordinary rifles.
